Other NHS services

When the surgery is closed, or for problems we are not the best place to help with, there are other NHS services you can use.

Urgent help

  • For a life-threatening emergency, call 999 or go to A&E.
  • For urgent help that is not life-threatening, call NHS 111 or visit 111.nhs.uk, 24 hours a day.
  • A pharmacy can give advice and treatment for many everyday illnesses. Find a pharmacy.

Walk-in and urgent treatment centres

  • Practice Plus Brighton Station Health Centre runs a walk-in service for minor illnesses and injuries, open 8am to 8pm daily. Call 0333 321 0946.
  • Lewes Victoria Hospital Urgent Treatment Centre treats minor injuries and illnesses, 8am to 8pm daily.

Tests and X-rays

You need a referral from a GP or clinician before you can have a blood test or an X-ray. If we have referred you, you can use the local services below.

  • For blood tests, Hove Polyclinic runs a service for ages 16 and over, by appointment. Call 01273 265580 (8:30am to 3:30pm) to book.
  • X-rays are walk-in, with no appointment needed, but a referral is required for all of them. You can go to Hove Polyclinic (X-ray open 9am to 4:30pm, Monday to Friday) or the Imaging Department at the Royal Sussex County Hospital. A GP or clinician referral is valid for 6 weeks.

Hove Polyclinic is at Nevill Avenue, Hove, BN3 7HY. Phone 01273 242024. More about Hove Polyclinic.

Other services

  • For sexual health and contraception, contact the Brighton and Hove Sexual Health and Contraception Service (SHAC) on 01273 523 388 or at brightonsexualhealth.com. Clinics are at Morley Street and the Claude Nicol Centre.
  • For mental health support, see our Mental health and wellbeing page.
  • For muscle, bone and joint problems, see our Self-referral services page.

Health visitors and midwives

Health visitors support families with children aged 0 to 19, with feeding, development, sleep, behaviour and more. You can contact the Brighton and Hove Health Visiting Service directly on 01273 266000 (Monday to Friday, 9am to 4:30pm), or text the confidential Parentline (for parents of under-5s) on 07507 331296. See the Health Visiting Service for more.

Midwives and maternity care are provided by University Hospitals Sussex, and you do not need to see a GP first. Refer yourself from around 6 weeks pregnant using the maternity self-referral form. For urgent advice after 14 weeks, call the maternity triage team (24 hours) on 01273 664793. See our Pregnancy and maternity page for more.
