Mental Health & Wellbeing
There are lots of ways to get support with your mental health, and for many of them you do not need to see a GP first.
If you need urgent help now
- If life is at immediate risk, for example someone has seriously harmed themselves or taken an overdose, call 999 or go to A&E.
- If you are in a mental health crisis but it is not immediately life-threatening, call NHS 111 and select the mental health option. A trained mental health professional will help. It is free, available 24 hours a day, and for people of all ages, so you can call about yourself or about someone you care for.
If you need to talk, or you are struggling but not in crisis, call the Samaritans free, any time, on 116 123, or text SUSSEX to 85258 for confidential support by text.
Talking therapies
For anxiety, stress or low mood, adults can refer themselves to the NHS Brighton and Hove Wellbeing Service. You do not need to see a GP first. Call 0300 002 0060.
Support at our practice
As well as your GP, our practice has a mental health practitioner who can see patients with a wide range of mental health needs, and a social prescriber who can help with practical things that affect how you feel, such as isolation, money, housing or getting back to activities you enjoy.
To ask about any of these, send us an online request and tell us what is going on. We will arrange the right support for you, whether that is our mental health practitioner, social prescribing or a GP.
Children and young people
For urgent help, children and young people can call NHS 111 and select the mental health option. This is for all ages.
If you are worried about a child or young person’s mental health, the Brighton and Hove Wellbeing Service supports children and young people too. Call 0300 002 0060.
