Test Results
When you have a test, such as a blood test, urine sample, swab, x-ray or scan, the clinician who arranges it will tell you when your results are likely to be ready and how to get them.
How to get your results
The easiest way to see your results is online, through the NHS App. There are two free services, and you can reach both from the app.
Tests we have arranged
You can see most tests we have arranged, such as blood and urine tests, in the NHS App. Results appear once a clinician has reviewed them, which is usually within a few days. Some tests take longer.
You may see a result before we have spoken to you about it. A result outside the normal range is not always a cause for concern, so please try not to worry. If you have any questions, you can send us an online request.
If you would rather not use the NHS App, you can call us on 01273 305723 and our reception team will help.
Hospital tests, x-rays and scans
If your test, x-ray or scan was done at a hospital in Sussex, you may be able to see the result through Patients Know Best. This is a secure personal health record used across Sussex, where you can see your hospital results, scan and x-ray reports and clinic letters in one place. It is free and you can choose whether to use it.
You can open Patients Know Best inside the NHS App, under Your Health, or sign in at patientsknowbest.com with your NHS login. Hospital results and imaging can take longer to show. Scan and x-ray reports are usually released about four weeks after the test.
How long results take
As a guide, the results we arrange are usually back with us:
- blood tests: around 5 working days
- x-rays and scans: up to 2 weeks
If you have a follow-up appointment booked, please check with reception that your results are back before you come in.
Will we contact you?
We do not routinely contact patients about normal results. We will contact you if a result is abnormal, if you need to do something, or if a clinician has asked us to arrange follow-up.
If you have been advised to book an appointment to talk through your results, or you have ongoing symptoms or concerns, please send us an online request.
Tests arranged by a hospital or clinic
If a hospital or another service arranged your test, the team that arranged it is responsible for the result and for any follow-up, even if the sample was taken here. You may be able to see the result through Patients Know Best, but please contact that team if you have any questions about it.
Getting results for someone else
To protect your privacy, we can only share results with the patient they belong to, unless we have their consent or you have proxy access to their record. If you look after someone else, see Support for carers.
